Community Believes Repeat Catastrophic Flooding May Have Been Preventable by TxDOT

Hit by powerful gulf storms just two years apart, farmer and rancher family believe the devastating flooding of their property could have been prevented or reduced if it wasn’t for the design and lack of upkeep of Interstate-10 by TxDot. During Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Imelda, the highway’s median barrier created a dam effect that turned the land north of the highway into a lake. Locals believe the barrier and a lack of maintenance to the highways drainage system could have been corrected and even attempted to have authorities demolish part of the median before Imelda. Now the citizens of Winnie are looking to take their fight to the courts to keep history from repeating itself.
